Members-only works on Roku, with one difference from Apple TV and Fire TV: the viewer types the access code on the television itself, with the remote. There is no code to enter on a phone.
Why Roku is different
Roku only certifies channels that handle sign-in on the device. Signing in or unlocking through a phone or a website is reserved for pay-TV providers. A Roku channel that sends viewers to a phone can be rejected in Roku's review, so your Roku app keeps the whole step on the television.
What the viewer sees
They open a row with a padlock. The TV shows "This is for members" and "Enter the access code you were given."
They type the code with the on-screen keyboard, press right and select Unlock.
The TV shows "You're in." and the members-only rows play from then on.
If the code is wrong, expired or already used on the maximum number of TVs, the TV says so in plain words and the viewer can try again.
Everything else is the same as on the other platforms: you create the codes under Members in your dashboard, one code opens everything you marked as members only, and expiry, device limit and revoking work exactly as described in Members-only content.
Tip: Roku's on-screen keyboard is slow to type on. Short codes are easier for your viewers.
What does not work on Roku
Unlocking from your own website (partner API). That path unlocks a TV by the short code it shows for the phone, and a Roku TV no longer shows one.
Support letting a TV in for you. That path also needs the code on the screen. On Roku, give the viewer an access code instead.
Selling access. Roku requires paid subscriptions and purchases to run through Roku Pay inside the channel, and the channel may not point viewers to any other way to pay, including your website. Roku keeps a share of each sale (20 % under Roku's current terms; the agreement in your Roku developer account is what counts).
Tappla's Roku apps do not include Roku Pay today. On Roku, members-only is for free memberships: a congregation, a team, a class, a club. If you sell access, sell it for Apple TV, Fire TV and Android TV, where viewers can buy on your website and the app opens what they bought. If selling on Roku matters to you, talk to us.
Which Roku apps type the code on the TV
Roku apps built from November 5, 2026 on. A Roku app built before that shows a code that viewers enter on their phone. It still works, but Roku can reject that version in review. If you want to use members-only on Roku and your Roku app is older, ask our support team for a new Roku build before you lock content.
